WORKSHOP 1: "Script Analysis"
A VITAL TOOL FOR DIRECTORS, ACTORS, DESIGNERS, THEATRE AND FILM ENTHUSIASTS.
Objective : To break down a script into its essential components to explore possibilities for a creative and confident interpretation in performance.

What brings us all together? As a community theatre, a repertory company, or a film crew? It is the script that attracts all our creative energies! Yet, understanding the possibilities a script gives us takes some skills that we quickly learn through a workshop or application. In our workshop on script analysis, we will focus on one script and go through tried and tested methods to mine a script for its layers, which can provide impulses for creative choices in direction, acting, designing, or producing.

Workshop Details
Day 1
-
Participants will have read the script at least once in advance.
-
A brief introduction to the six planes of analysis:
-
The External Plane: Events and facts
-
The Social Plane: Cultural or historical contexts
-
The Literary Plane: The playwright's voice, style, rhetoric, and structure. (Work with a basic understanding of structure, punctuation, and choice of words.)
-
The Aesthetic Plane: The play offers production choices for costumes, sets, lighting, performance styles, etc.
-
The Internal Plane: The Characters' inner lives and psychology. (Basic Jungian archetypes in a short workshop)
-
The Physical Plane: The characters' looks, moves, and actions. The space, the time, the age of the character, etc.
Day 2 & 3
-
Participants will learn how to score a script for events - past, present, and likely to occur in the future
-
Participants will write down a paragraph on each of these planes. They will also work on creating a set design on paper based on their analysis of the script
-
Participants will read out specific scenes that support or challenge the participants' analysis

Day 4
Look at Apollonian elements and Dionysian elements. Participants will be given a chart of characteristics of Apollonian structure and Dionysian expression. They must identify these elements. Read out specific scenes, synthesizing the analysis of Day 1 and responding in broad strokes to the qualities inherent in the script.

WORKSHOP 2: "Acting with Intention"

Objective :
Archetypal gestures and quality of movement, tempo, and sensation

Find the right intention everyone relates to because of its archetypal quality. Acting requires you to be specific with your choices - a relationship with the script, your understanding of it, and as a response to your co-actor. The archetype draws on timeless and universal actions. Tempo gives the tools to interpret sub-text, and sensations are a path towards emotions. Together, they help you create unique moments on stage that could belong only to you!
